This architectural two-storey family dwelling in Christchurch features curved brick masonry cladding and privacy shade screens. The open-plan living arrangement, with seamless indoor outdoor flow, is provided thanks to the large door openings accessible from the ground floor structure.
Mercia were bought on to this project to provide advice from the initial concept right through to detailed design completion, including building consent documentation. This involved approach resulted in an efficient, coherent structure for our clients, as everything aligned was seamlessly taken care of by the team.
Of note are the complex seismic bracing, which required a stiff structure, provided by a combination of ply bracing shear walls and reinforced concrete masonry. The shear walls utilised structural diaphragms to transfer lateral loads throughout the building.
Large spans were achieved using structural steelwork and HYJoists. The architectural curved brick facades with heavy brick cladding (mentioned above) cover the first floor and extensive glazing below.
