Structural Engineering - Residential

We specialise in structural engineering for residential homes, apartments and housing complexes

ABOUT THE SERVICE

As qualified structural engineers, our team are experts at applying safe and economical design specifications to create functional, modern spaces. With award-winning feature homes, properties, townhouses and apartments, we consider all aspects of the design project, turning the 'what if' into actuality.

More about Structural Design.

Structural design involves crafting a safe and functional structure capable of withstanding various loads throughout its lifespan. Our team will evaluate the stability, strength, and stiffness of the structure to ensure it can endure the forces it encounters.

Designing a structure typically involves five key steps: (1) modelling the structure, (2) analysing the loads it will face, (3) conducting a structural analysis to assess its behaviour under these loads, (4) designing the structural elements, and (5) detailing the final design for construction.

Modelling.

The first step in structural design is modelling the structure's mechanical skeleton, which includes foundations, columns, beams, frames, trusses, and other key elements. This begins with an architectural model that visually represents the structure but is too detailed for engineering calculations. To prepare for structural analysis, the architectural model is simplified to focus solely on the load-bearing components that transfer loads to the ground.

Load Analysis.

In this step, the structural engineer identifies all potential loads that the structure may face during its lifespan.

Engineers determine the magnitude of these loads using structural design codes. Because multiple loads can act on a structure simultaneously, it's crucial to analyse different combinations to find the most critical scenario. For example, the combined effect of dead and live loads, or dead and wind loads, must be evaluated. Structural engineering software typically automates the creation of these load combinations for thorough analysis.

Structural Analysis.

Engineers will assess how the structure responds to various load combinations, a process known as global analysis. The objective is to understand how the structural members behave under different conditions. The analysis yields important data, such as internal force diagrams (shear, bending moment, normal force, torsion, and stress), reactions, and the resulting deformations or deflections.

While simple structures like single beams or columns can be analysed manually, more complex 2D or 3D structures require extensive calculations, making manual computation prone to errors.

Structural Design.

In structural design, engineers determine the dimensions of building elements based on analysis results. They check these dimensions against stability, strength, and stiffness requirements from design codes. If the dimensions don’t meet these requirements, adjustments are made and the process is repeated. The final design includes the sizes of each element and material details like reinforcement needs. Familiarity with local design codes is essential for compliance.

Detailing.

Detailing involves finalising the placement of structural connections and specifying reinforcement and fasteners. Proper detailing enhances structural ductility and can reduce costs by optimising connection designs and material use.
